Dummies – yes or no? It is such a hot topic right now. I am often asked about whether it would be appropriate to use a dummy in a newborn photo session so I thought it about time that I address the topic in my blog.
Binky, pacifier, dummy, soother, sucker – wow they have so many different names! Today I am going to refer to it as a dummy to keep things simple for the Mummies and Daddies reading who haven’t had much sleep with a newborn!
What is the purpose of a dummy?
A dummy is used as a method of pacifying / soothing your baby. Babies can often settle better when they are sucking on something. When breastfeeding this can be the breast or if you are formula feeding this can be the bottle teat. Sometimes parents choose to use a dummy to help settle a newborn.
Using a dummy in your newborn photo session
It is very normal for a baby to become unsettled during a newborn session. Babies typically like to sleep and be cuddled. During a newborn studio session in Plymouth we move your baby safely to pose them. Although this means that we can capture gorgeous photos it also means that we unsettle your baby when they are trying to sleep.
Sometimes using a dummy in this situation can be a great aid to help settle your baby back to sleep. It can be a comfort to them without using a bottle or the breast.
If you have chosen not to use a dummy we will do the session without one. Parents who use a dummy at home I ask that you please bring at least one dummy with you.
Parents often choose not to use a dummy with their new baby. If you don’t usually use a dummy but would like to for your session I have individually packed sterilised dummies available.
Using a dummy in your newborn photo session is such a difficult subject to talk about. I am a Mummy did not want to use a dummy with my children but ended up using one for nap and bedtime. I appreciate it can stir up lots of hot debate. If you want to chat to me more about this I would love to hear from you. If you are planning a newborn session with me and have any questions regarding dummy use within your session I would love to clear up any concern ahead of your session.
