1st August – 7th August is World Breastfeeding Week in Plymouth 2019! Lets celebrate feeding our babies!
Now before you read any further: I just want to say that I was a Mummy who had a difficult breastfeeding journey and ultimately ended up feeding both my girls formula. And they are both still alive. And are both amazing! So although breastfeeding, if it works for you, is a great way to feed your child – I believe that a fed baby is best!
What is World Breastfeeding Week in Plymouth 2019?
World Breastfeeding week was first celebrated in 1992 and is designed to help encourage breastfeeding and health in our babies. Newborns are so tiny when they are born and we need to make sure we are giving them the very best start in life. The World Health Organisation believe that one of the ways we can do this is by breastfeeding.
Why is breastfeeding so important?
- Breastmilk is amazing stuff. It contains millions of cells that provide nutrition for our babies that contribute to their healthy development. And your breastmilk changes to the needs of your baby. Isn’t that amazing?! Read more about what is in breastmilk here!
- The innocenti declaration states that breastfeeding can contribute to reducing the risk of breast and ovarian cancer in women. Whether you are breastfeeding or not always check your breasts ladies – it is SO important!
- Breastmilk contains antibodies. These antibodies help your baby fight off viruses and bacteria.
- Breastmilk is free and ready when your baby needs a feed!
Now I debated adding this bullet point in this blog post. I remember when I was going through my breast feeding journey I didn’t feel like it was a ‘free’ path to choose. The breast pump, the nipples shields, the steriliser, the muslins and the breastfeeding friendly bras and clothing all added up quickly! Not to mention all the chocolate!! But formula is expensive so yes it is almost certainly the cheaper option of the two should you continue your breastfeeding journey for 6 months to a year. The breastmilk is also ready when your baby needs it and the perfect temperature. The only kettle you need to boil is for your cup of tea!
- Breastfeeding is great for Mum too! Breastfeeding can help your uterus shrink back down to size while also burning off calories!
So if you are still reading I want you to know that there is no right or wrong choice when it comes to feeding your baby. This is breastfeeding awareness week so lets celebrate that! But don’t forget your feeding journey is personal to you and your baby. Your health and the health of your baby are the most important things to consider when you make your decision.
